Will Microsoft’s New Surface Trailers Help Build Their Brand?

October 16, 2012 by Big Friendly Marketer

Microsoft recently released two videos highlighting the new Surface Tablet coming out on October 26th, but the main question is how will these ads and future branding help to reivigerate the consumer to the Windows 8 Tablet and the Microsoft brand? The two Surface videos use the same underlying beat but take two different approaches in building interest for each.  The first titled “The Surface Movement” reminds us of the fun dancing ipod commercial trying to instill a certain cool factor to the product but instead of using a specific song its seems that Microsoft when with using what looks like dancers from The League of Extraordinary Dancers to highlight the flexibility of the image and keyboard and use of the Surface.  In order to knock the reigning Champ of tablets, the iPad, it seems that Microsoft is decided to go after Apple by using some of their initial marketing tactics.  This could be interesting because around the release date of the Surface its seems Apple may be announcing their own iPad mini.

The second video titled “Microsoft Surface Street Art Time Lapse”, has the same beat, but is a more dry video that displays the Surface being painted on the side of a building. Microsoft should have focused more on the apps that the tablet will be running and less of the design of the surface, what if instead of painting on the building, Microsoft had created buildings on multiple Surface tablets which thus created a new skyline.  Microsoft must go after the creatives and you creatives to help build up their tablet line up.

These two videos are to help build excitement for the launch of the Windows surface, but the main question will be how many devices will make this launch a success and how will this impact the sales of Android and iOS devices?
